17-year-old Olivia Rodrigo has broken Spotify records with her latest single 'driver's license'. The emotional power-pop ballad was released only last week but already it has gathered a total of 65 Million Spotify streams. Rodrigo became well known for High school musical: the musical series released towards the end of 2019 with her single 'All I want'. Her song quickly 'blew up' on social media platforms including TikTok. Tiktok allowed her song to reach a large audience all across the world. This Tuesday (12th January 2021) Olivia broke music records as she overtook Ariana Grande, a huge pop icon, with her song being streamed the most ever in one day with a total of 17 Million streams. The song has reached number 1 on multiple charts and number 3 on Apple music charts behind one of Olivia's inspirations Taylor Swift, an incredible achievement for anyone, especially someone of such a young age.
The song tells the story of her recent break up which was hinted about on her social media. the simplicity of the song resonated with young people and allowed her to gain such popularity.
Olivia shows off her incredible range in the chorus of her song. This type of song is not new for the pop industry, so for fans when listening to this song it already sounds like something familiar to them and recognisable, allowing them to quickly fall in love with this new song. Rodrigo's song has a nostalgic feel to it and the piano-assisted vocals tell the story of her teenage romance.
Olivia pours her full heart and soul into this recording of the song. We really feel the power of her lyrics on the line 'I still f*****g love you' where we can almost feel her pain of the breakup. Her falsetto voice almost mimics the heartbreak that Rodrigo has undertaken from HSMTMS co-star Jossua Basset. The young Disney star writes about something true to her, love and breakup ballads and common in the music industry and it is popular amongst her target audience of teens and her own age group.
Fans have compared her to the likes of Taylor Swift and Lorde, and so they had high hopes for this new track. Needless to say that they were not disappointed. Dances and Parodies of the song have already taken over the internet only one week after the release. Olivia's reputation meant that the song was going to be good, and as a result of this fans are eagerly awaiting an EP from her.
Olivia has done an incredible performance for this song and we hope to see more from her in the future as she dominants the charts and levels with the most popular female stars in the music industry.
